I have done a quite bit of upgrades for my car such as adding power seats (heated/memory), auto dimming mirror with L/R power folding outside mirrors, upgraded HID headlights, aftermarket headunit/amp/sub/speaker/rear view camera, and updated the windshield tank to the 7L tank. Now I got my sights on this 2002 model that just recently came to my local pick and pull. It has a front bumper with the headlight washer system and fog lights. Being as I am eager to keep adding stuff my car I am very interested in retrofitting that bumper to my car. Anyone experienced in doing this? I remember asking a while back on this forum about replacing the bumper and was told it required some modifications in order to adapt the "new to me" bumper on my car. I also know the dealer or a mechanic access to a C3 or higher is required to activate the fog lights. Your opinions and suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks!
So the stock halogen fogs are just useless. Especially with an HID setup in the main headlights. You can't even tell if they are on or not. So I swapped them LEDs! Much much much better.
So I tried a few different set of LEDs but the fog light was poorly directed and scattered. Obviously these fog lamps are a reflector design and are only meant for halogens. So finally I saw this on Amazon:
These LEDS will let you change the beam pattern on the LED by allowing you to rotate the locking nut. The original problem with previous LEDS i tried is the LEDs were directed at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position. With these LEDs I was able to change it to the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock position which proved to be very effective in producing a nice beam pattern and straight cutline with minimal beam scatter.
However, space was a problem that I ran into. These would not fit in the housing. So I had to cut some of the fog light housing plastic to make space. Some trial and error was involved but I managed to get it to fit nicely.
I did not realize that those bulbs are H8. From image in parts they look like H3. So, you had to cut hole in bracket not fog lamp. I wonder how cooling fan will stand up to weather.
I am contemplating mod to high beams. I find it inadequate.
@Witek_M
sorry I meant bracket not housing. But if you are contemplating about getting better high beams you should consider retrofitting your headlights with bixeon morimoto mini 4.0 or 5.0 d2s projectors. With some modding they can be used to replace the halogen projectors ( I am assuming you have halogen projectors yes?).
My ML350 has bixenon headlights. Low beam is just fine. There is a relay in each headlight that cuts power off to high beam bulbs once low beam is on. My idea is to jump each relay, install LED's in place of flash to pass high beams and run high and bixenon together.
