So why is it that the first pic has the wiper on the left, and the second pic has the wiper on the right...???

I know the standard for S123 rear wipers is positioned on the right.

The S124 rear wipers are on the left.

I can't speak for Mercedes, but it's a simple modification/adjustment to alter the rear wiper rest position on 1980's VW Rabbits and Golfs.

I believe the mod originated for the "lay flat" look, as the stock set up (at least on the Golf) rests at an angle. Someone along the way figured out a rest adjustment on either side. I can dig up some photos if you would like.
