This is my first winter with my B170 from 2006 and I'm a little surprised how AC is working. During summer AC was working perfectly. Right now, with temperatures below zero, AC is cooling only when I put it on blue dot (max cooling). When I put even one step more the air is getting hotter. When I put on 16C - it's warming. The previous owner said that it's working that way - car "knows" there is a -4C outside, so to get a 16C inside the cabin you need to get hot air. During summer I drove on 20-22C and the air was cold. Could you please tell me is that really how the AC works on this car? Or is it due to the low refrigerant and I need to get it recharged?

The setting on a/c controls are not the temperature of blowing air - it's the desired temperature inside the cabin.
If it's minus 5ºC outside, even setting the a/c on 13ºC will get you a warm air ... it's a very simple concept 😉
Once the cabin is warmed up to the desired temperature, the air coming in will be much cooler (but still not straight from outside).
Every a/c system I've encountered for the past two decades works exactly the same, although to be fair it was mostly Mercs :ROFLMAO:, with exception of some hired cars during summer holidays...

@ MB•David
Thank You for your help. Previously I was driving Hyundai i30 for couple years and a/c was working differently. A/c knob actually didn't have temperatures - first half was blue the other half red. When I put in blue, air was always cold. If I wanted to have a hot air I had to put on red part of knob. Cold winter or hot summer - a/c was working exactly the same.

No worries :)
The MB a/c is actually quite good, you'll just have to get used to a different approach ...
Setting a desired temperature makes more sense to me - it is sort of "set and forget" system, where you don't need to constantly adjust the a/c - I like it.
I normally only change mine twice a year: summer / winter and the settings alternate between ~ 18ºC and 22ºC.
