Took a long drive and thought my driveline may have the very beginnings of vibration. With these Mercedes, any vibration indicates something's up, the car is supposed to be extremely smooth... Wondering how easy it is to replace 2008 S550 flex discs? Are there more than one? Sometimes crossmember is in the way... Could be tire out of balance.. Thanks

Could be a number of items . Main problem checking on this is engine mounts or transmission mount on your model .. But first i would change the transmission mount .This is an easy job ,,i would say that the W220 is the same as the W221 but check first.

Yes, the driveline definitely has flex discs. Yours should have the same configuration as mine (thinking you have 2WD, not 4MATIC) so there is a front flex at the transmission and a rear at the differential. The front can be changed without much issue, along with the transmission mount as @plinker17722 mentioned. The rear requires removal of the exhaust, which honestly is not too bad especially if you have a lift you can use. If you do both, please make sure to change the center support bearing and bushing as I found mine quite saggy after 10 years on the road.

In the image below you can see the two flex discs, the center bearing and in #130 the flex disc kit that includes new bolts/nuts/washers. My chassis called for two different discs for front/rear.

Many thanks, you guys. The dealer I got the car from told me they had replaced one motor mount. Why replace one? In my opinion, when replacing one, heck do them both, and prolly the tranny mount at the same time as well. Sitting at a red light, there is vibration so I assume the "other" engine mount is wanting replacement. 12 years and 134K miles... So I will go with 2 new engine mounts and a tranny mount, and while my indy is doing those I will have a look at the flex discs at that time. This isn't my first Benz, so I know how smooth a Benz should be!! People used to get in my W140 and remark about how incredibly smooth it was. I'd say, Yes, that's the way they make these things! So those mounts are first on the agenda. I know the engine is smooth, with new spark plugs (the exact right ones) and also new ignition coils I got because those are pretty inexpensive, and you can't go wrong with changing those as part of a tune-up....LOL

You're absolutely right about the smooth ride. Even those I make ride in the trunk don't complain, well they better not if they know what's good for them.

The passengers in the trunk NEVER complain. They don't even move.
