W220 In-Car Phone Installation: Just for Fun (or is it..? 😉)

Today I spotted a Post from a young Gentleman from a remote part of Sweden (allegedly) on the 'Bookface' W220 forum with a pic of an ancient 3g Nokia 3310i phone in the cradle, asking: “Is there something special i need to know to start the Phone in my 2000 w220, do i need a SIM card in it for it to start? “. o_O

I replied as diplomatically as possible, explaining (you can guess the rest..?:ROFLMAO:).

But it reminded me that my 20-year-old ‘retro’ Nokia 6310i works perfectly in the factory option hands-free cradle and is recognised by the updated facelift Comand (make & take hands-free calls / stores telephone numbers / etc). IF… it has a SIM card in it - whether in, or out of the car. I'm not an mobile phone / IT Expert, but DUGGHHHH or Wot?!

Before You W220 Lot say it: Yep, Bluetooth & Android Screen upgrades are fashionable on our cars, and a good idea (or ‘essential’) for some? But, for Moi, the original Nokia phone installation is authentic to the car. The fact that I’ve only used it twice in 7 years is irrelevant (I do own a more modern Android Samsung). But it just seems ‘right’ in context - and in case of an ‘Emergency’ whilst driving?

That said & either way: IMHO it’s always better to Stop safely to use a car phone for Whaaadever reason (even hands-free) due to the known Driver distraction, unless absolutely un-avoidable. The UK Traffic Police are increasingly attentive to this when investigating RTCs (Road Traffic Collisions💥) involving suspected ‘Driver Distraction’ of any kind 🚓👮‍♂️👮‍♀️. In-Car electronic devices (e.g. Phone & Satnav) Driver-usage logs (Data) are one of the first things they check before & at the time of collision - and especially when Injuries are involved:eek:🤕 🚑. Food for thought?

(N.B. pic below of Comand screen telephone function is for pre-facelift, but you get my drift?).

'Better to get there a few minutes late Late - but Safe?'. A few of my former Traffic Police colleagues testify to this Mantra after they've 'Attended the Scene' on the rare but sometimes distressing RTCs on the UK's busy roads. And not forgetting.. the impact on others directly or in-directly involved (Families, friends, work colleagues, nursing Staff, Trauma Counsellors to name a few) 😢 ;).

Hey ho: not my intention to be a Doom Merchant. Only to say: Keep smiling on your W220 Journey - and stay as Safe as you can on it 🤞.

I would like to second that sentiment Mark.
When I was a Mercedes salesman in Ireland nearly every W211 and W220 I sold was specified with “pre phone installation” which at that time was designed to take the world’s most popular phone, the Nokia 6310i. When I bought my car a year ago it had this option fitted so I bought a really nice phone off Fleabay and through a Lebara SIM card in it and BINGO it works a treat. For me it’s really just about completing the car. I don’t use it much here in England but I will in a couple of months when we do our European trip.

Yay Pete! It just proves that old / 'retro' / iconic Nokia 6310i Tech still works on our (equally retro?) W220s! 🕺

It reminds me: in the early 2000s I was engaged by Nokia Corporation to deliver sales training for their Territory Sales Managers & Teams in Finland, Spain, Germany, Poland and a few others. This was at the time when Nokia were starting to lose market share to Samsung, Apple etc with their emerging technologies...

To win the contract, I was first invited to Nokia HQ in Helsinki for an interview with their training managers - 2 lovely young ladies 💃😉 - and somehow managed to convince them that I was the Man for the Job ('The Advanced Art of Professional Sales') etc🤞. I left home in W-s-M at 04:00, boarded a flight from Bristol airport at 07:00, arrived in Helsinki at the Nokia HQ by mid-day, had the interview & a quick lunch before heading back home to the UK.

End-to-end, the entire 'Mission' (prep, logistics, transfers, flights, interview etc) took a very buzy 24 hours, but I slept happily and like a proverbial Log that night. Next morning, I awoke in a daze and my first thoughts were: 'How on Earth did I do ALL THAT in only 24 Hours?!' o_O :ROFLMAO:.

The rest is history (Nokia Vs. the others in the mobile phone / tablet marketplace since around 2000), but they were happy days as an international sales training consultant & I wouldn't have missed them for anything. ;)

I have to wonder...how much longer with the 6310 phones keep working? I know that here in the USA, they're shutting down the 3G networks in favor of 4G and 5G. Which "G" does the 6310 support?

I think this answers it for the UK at least...

'In 2021, the government made an agreement with mobile network operators Vodafone, EE, O2 and Three that 3G and 2G mobile services will be phased out by 2033. However, the providers are free to choose when they end 3G and 2G services, within this timeframe'.

My antique 3G 6310i works ok in the meantime 🤞 (even if I never actually use it.. :ROFLMAO:). If I still have my W220 in 10 years' time (when I'm age 77) & 3G goes out of commission I'll have the latest version of semaphore installed 🤪

Quick Follow-up to my post:

My Mobile In-Car Telephony Advisor & Personal Carer, Samantha, has just popped in with some useful technical advice.

She says her other elderly, wealthy W220 owner Gentlemen Clients prefer a 'Hand-Held' approach to dealing with their Old Equipment compared with fiddling remotely with new-fangled Battery operated Digital Devices which, apparently, can explode spontaneously if over-loaded ⚡💥 o_O.

She went on to say that her, er, 'Clients' also enjoy a Long, Smooth Ride in a W220 to ensure that everything is working perfectly before they settle her, er, 'Consultancy' Fees 💃🕺💪😮😲.
