not all e classes are covered under all the recalls for e classes. and if they have been done and you have an issue later, you still have to pay. and tsb's are just a note for techs that other dealers have had the same issue and this is a fix for it. doesnt mean you will get the fix for free.

anyway depending on your model, there are recalls for

voltage regulator
battery control unit software unpdate
wheel well drains
sbc ground wire, bracket and software update
subframe bolt replacement

as far as dtb's there are numerous ones. too many for me to remember

these are the most common.

Yes, and 04. 04 was just about as bad as 03. It was nearly the same car with the same shotty electronics.
And an -05 is built with the same way, with the same parts as an -03 and -04 would have after the recall work. Should I avoid that too?

Of course a later car usually has lower mileage and should then have less service from wear.

u think it's a good idea to go for the 04, 50,000 miles, 1st owner once I confirm the dealer maintenance + all recalls done ?

from my research, it seems like it's the luck of the draw. Some owners have had zero issues and some owners have had many issues.

I'm used to japanese luxury vehicles with very little things to worry about. I was so surprised to see the seemingly never-ending list of things that usually go wrong with the w211.

No, avoid at all costs, ESPECIALLY if you are used to Japanese cars. It's not just about the recall items, its about the shotty electronics that will continue to fail and keep the car off road.

But your advice was to avoid buying a W201 too, not a lot of electronics issues on that one. Are you more of the opinion that a Japanese car would suite better for everybody? It is a free world and I don't have a problem if one has this opinion but why not state it straight.

just stay away from the 03 and 04 model years, other than that the rest seem to be doing quite well. i bought mine with 37K and currently it has been driven about 1600 miles, so far doing okay. All problems were serviced at the dealer and taken care of. A friend of mine had an 04 and had significantly more problems than his 00 W210 E320. the W210 came out great. luckily mine was owned by the dealers' wife and everything was taken care of. I do not regret buying mine since my mom is driving it right now while i'm in Japan. Even then all my vehicles are taken in for service every 3 to 4 months on top of their service requirements. Thats how i avoid my problems. But if you really want one go to another year with less problems and better overall build quality.

wow 1600 miles and so far so good? and your relieved with 1600 miles with no problems ? that's like having it less than a month .It's so funny, it's as if your relieved your car made it that far ! =)

amazes me how some of u mercedes owners have come to expect SO LITTLE out of your car.

with lexus and infiniti, 100,000 miles and your barely getting started. Most lexus owners would say "100,000 miles with no problems", where as a mercedes w211 owner would say "1600 miles with no problems".

The car is not even for me but for a relative who has a benz fetish, I've tried to convince him otherwise.

I never mentioned anything to do with a W201. Not sure where you pulled that one from?

Me and my father in law both are driving a 2003 model E240. We haven't had any problems at all. Just a few recalls done by the dealer but the cars never let us down.
Our dealer offers a maintenance contract. For 375 euro a year he offers complete regular maintenance. Minimum period is 3 years. It can be extended until the car is 15 years old.
It gives the fine feeling of an good relationship with the dealer and i am convinced that if something wil get wrong with the car they wil solve the problem Mercedes-like.
