I thought I saw a post on this but couldn't find it ... so here it is ...
what you'll need
T30 Torx driver (about 3" long)
10 mm allan wrench
Blue Lock tight (optional)

MAKE SURE YOUR STEERING WHEEL AND WHEES ARE STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Step 1 - see photo
Insert the T30 driver through the holes in the back of the steering wheel to remove the air bag ... I did not disconnect my battery but you might want to.

Step 2
Remove the 10 mm alan bolt (sorry no picture)

Step 3 - see photo
Note the position of the steering wheel and remove it

Step 4 - see photo
Remove the 2 philips screws. Remove the black part (do not open this ribon cable holder ... it will never be the same

Step 5 - see photo
Remove the 3 philips screws that hold on the mulit-switch. The big phillips screw shown in the background is your problem. Remove the multi switch

Step 6 - see photo
I removed the bolt shown and added a bit of blue lock tight ... once you tighten this you're turn signal/cc wont move when you activate them

Thanks for the info.. I'll try it tomorrow... I'm new to this forum, and am trying to replace the turn signal assembly. I'm guessing on a fix to a short causing the #11 fuse under the hood to blow. The result is no turn signals so I'm hoping this is the problem.
What does the writing on the back side of your turn signal lever say? Kind of a weird place to have writing...

I can't make it out from the photo either, but it's too dark outside now for me to look at mine for comparison.

Thanks to durado for posting the DIY!

A broken clock-spring could indeed cause an intermittent short, let us know what you find.

Nice post, durado.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Those are the pictograms that indicate the various functions of the lever - push for washer, turn for wiper, etc. But is on the wrong side - should be pointing to the driver. Unless he has turned it while working on the car.

Nope - I just realized that you can click the image to bring it full size - it states DOT (Dept of Transportation) and some other codes. Weird - I need to check mine and see if it's there.

Now look what you started - I had to go and see if mine had it as well.:D No text on mine.
Mine neither. Wonder if it was replaced at some point.....
Mine has some text on the same side, but even with a flashlight and magnifying glass I could not make it out.
this did not work for me,

my signal is still loose, and whenever i touch it the stalk will turn on the high beams, I can't seem to turn the high beams off as the entire signal stick wants to fall out almost.... anyone shed some light on this?
E320 97 | Combo switch issue

Same problem – starting fist with the whole combo switch been very loose, then high beams will be turn on every time I will touch the lever and finally the cover of the switch at the steering column just get loose and hang over the lever. And yes, it gets the switch really loose with high beam on constantly. (I was able to switch it off by putting my fingers inside the switch). The reason – the switch lever swings worn out and almost broke. The remedy – order a new OEM switch for 110 $
Thanks for the pics! My blinker is stuck flashing left in the neutral position. I bought a replacement at the local Mercedes salvage yard for 40 but they gave me the wrong one. At least removing the 10 mm bolt will be easier when I do get the right one. Had to use a breaker bar. I wedged a bicycle pump in the steering wheel so it would not move...which helped a lot.
Thank you Durado for this pictorial. Its great
At one time I could have sworn this trick from Art was in the stickies. It involves drilling a small hole in the lower plastic column, but avoids all the myriad steps in this thread.

For those of interest it's a viable alternative.

Thank you for the great pictures. I needed 110 foot pounds to remove the wheel nut! Also, I did not see in your instructions to unplug the airbag at the airbag side of the harness (yellow connector) and leave the gray connector attached at the post. I tightened the internal clamp and all is well. In fact this went so well I may purchase a new steering wheel for my 06 E320 CDI. Great job.
Durado- Thank You for your detailed post. I just finished fixing my loose stalks and, thanks to your step-by-step DIY instructions, the job was a snap! The help in this forum from guys like you is greatly appreciated, I only hope I can repay the favor someday by adding my own how-to. Thanks again.
Is the Torx T30 an anti-tamper bit?

Is this 3" Torx T30 an anti-tamper bit, i.e. does it have a hole in its center?

TIA

No, it is the standard torx
