My external temperature sensor display has been playing up lately. It's been reading anywhere up to 59 deg C, when the outside temperature has been down to - 8 deg C. The display has now stopped functioning altogether and is now completely blank.

Does this indicate that the external sensor is faulty, or perhaps there is an open circuit / high resistance between the sensor and the display ?

Has anyone had a similar experience ?

The simplest way to determine functionality is to do the AC fault test, listed in the stickies.

If you get B1227 you know its faulty. Cheap by $$$ standards and very easy to replace.

The sensor does impact fan speed, plus with a good sensor you will have a good idea on how cold the beer is in the boot!!

Good luck

hey Sentinel.... i'm not too familiar with the 96... however, if your sensor is good and the wiring is intact, then most probably, the sensor has popped out of its holder/connector behind bumper/grille (causing higher engine bay temp readings).... take a look behind your lower grille where the sensor pokes out of and see if it has popped out of it ...... also check the connector to the sensor, it may have 'unplugged' itself (may be reason why you no longer have a reading) make sure it 'clicks' when you plug it in.... good luck. mate!
