I lost my spare key to my 2001 E320 Wagon. Can I purchase one from E-Bay and have programmed at a MB Dealer, or can I do this myself?

yes I think you could do that, a friend of mine lost his key for his 01 ML430 and purchased one from e-bay had it programmed at a MB Dealer for free.

I've seen a few posts stating that it can be done, but far more posts that says it cannot be done. If you buy a key from eBay and have it successfully programmed by your dealer, please post the results, along with the cost...

Thank you!

The smart key system is very sophisticated, The 01 E comes with two keys and a elecrtonic wallet key. There are 24 slots wailable for each car, the factory controls the coding. The remotes can not be recoded, or made to work. The dealer orders a replacement or additional, the replacement removes the origional, the additional adds one. If the dealer orders the wong one like in my case it disables the good one permanently. They had to order two new ones. The remote uses infrared to unlock the doors, and communicates via inductive energy to the steering collum lock. A properly coded remote can take up to 40 minutes to communicate with the steering collum.
There are remotes and then there are "smart-keys", anyone who thinks they can me programmed by the dealer or otherwise does not know what they are talking about.
I had a ML and the remotes are activated thru the HHT, they also use keys in the ignition!
do a search on "smartkey".

Sounds like a pretty informed response; thanks for the reply with such specific information.

I have an 01 E White/Java/Wagon and hope I never again have issues with the electronic key. If you look at the listings on E-Bay, they say "working" that means they illuminate when you push the button, and communicate (maybe) to a car but not yours. Many are stolen by valets, and others are scrapped by vendors. There are lots of caviats like "check" with your dealer they can program it. My dealer had a box of them but they still had to order.
The only use I can see is to impress someone, and to use the housing as a replacement if you get a nice clean one, which I plan on doing one day maybe, $30 or so on e bay or $140 at dealer without the mechanical key, a little more with. There is a sophisticated proceedure if they want to change the remotes, The factory sends out a board, a learning key, and new remotes and those are coded to the VIN. Those modules are tied to the engine management system and to the DAS. There are two electronic latches to keep the steering unlocked in case there is a failure. I have a copy of the 8 page workshop info. As I said before the battery is for the lock unlock, the electronic key gets its power from the ignition switch so the Infra Red does not get involved. The mechanical key gets you in the car if that portion fails, your 01 should have come with the small 'wallet" emergency key, they have since discontinued it.

Sorry the only reason why your friend was able to get one for his 01 ML430 is because the ML doesn't have the "smartkey" this only came out recently. The programing he probably got was so that he could unlock and lock his car.

adelrosario, don't get one from eBay you'll regret it. So be really nice to your service manager he might help you with the price of a spare key :)
