Hello,

My engine has a ticking sound that comes from the engine. It is only noticable at idle, and on inspection appears to be a relay within the engine bay. The relay seems to come on and off as and when its required. Anyone know what this part does?

This is the part in question that is ticking:

Any advice would be greatfully received. Thanks.

I'd respectfully ignore the "solution" in the other thread.

It's called a purge valve. Tapping means it's working, but you can clean it which will quiet it down. Remove it, disconnect it, clean it with aerosol carb cleaner, MAF cleaner, etc. Clean it out and let it dry, then reinstall. You can use the DIY in the W210 forum, but it's really pretty basic.

Good luck.

Engine speed?

Does the ticking sound you are experiencing increase with engine speed? Mine does. Sounds like a ticking lifter. Stays no matter engine speed or temperature. I have found no cure.
