I lay no claim to being a sage, and I'm not sure what a stalwart is. Still, I am replying if only to state that you must provide a complete Mercedes part number for there to be any possibility of me helping you.Sages and Stalwarts please provide your pearls of wisdom. being told Sachs strut shock having part number 115070 should fit into a r129
Bob unfortunately 115070 is what its says on the box its a HD type Sachs made in Germany strut that is not as soft as regular Sachs and not as hard as regular Bilstein HD.I lay no claim to being a sage, and I'm not sure what a stalwart is. Still, I am replying if only to state that you must provide a complete Mercedes part number for there to be any possibility of me helping you.
Anyway you can check with that seller what the part number was?Hello
From my experience when I've changed the front struts on my 91 500SL that you need struts with specific 129 part number, not 124. I replaced the front shocks with Sachs Boge struts as I couldn't find Bilstein where I live, and shipping them over was not an option as the car would sit for too long. The guy who sold me the struts insisted that both the 124 and 129 share the same struts, hesitantly I bought them. The car kept bottoming out after every speed hump, and the struts would hit the rubber shims hard. I gave them back, took my money and ended up purchasing another Sachs Boge set with the proper 129 part numbers from another store. Didn't have a problem since then.
I'm sorry I don't remember the part number, I just know that it starts with 129 not 124.
Here are OEM partnumbers.Anyway you can check with that seller what the part number was?
I have a fellow group member on an FB R129 group who has fitted these 115070's on his SL320 and he is very happy with them and days should not be an issue!
Very interesting indeed! I have noticed breakpoint in struts/springs some time ago but had no idea about the reason. All models referred to here, namely 201,124 and 129 use very different part numbers.
The 129 from 89 to 92 used a different front strut to the 93 to 01 models also.
89 to 91 had a lower front suspension but because owners were continually damaging the front valance a different spring and strut were installed from 93 - not many people are aware of this.
The Bilstein technical brochure is available from their German website which explains all of the above.
I shared your point with my tech who has some idea and also thought about your point and feel more than strut height (which is identical) or damping rates it maybe springs being different in 89-93 which you are referring to. As you will agree ride hight is mostly due to springs not struts, structs just provide damping and rebound. All models referred to here, namely 201,124 and 129 use very different part numbers.
