Hi there.

I bought a 2000 A class yesterday (w168), it seemed in pretty good condition and it worked well for a few hours. then an engine light. MB traced it to frayed wires that go into the ECU but cleared the fault and I didn't see the light for the rest of the day.

This morning I went to try and isolate the wires a little better so I didn't see the light for a while, but after re-zippering the wire the engine would not start. a couple of ticks and a noise like two bits of plastic hitting each other.

I checked the wiring and the one wire is pretty bare, but not broken through. Would this be the cause of the no start? Have I fried the ECU? Would bending the wire harness have broken any other wires internally?

Anyone know what the grey wire with a red stipe does? I'll attach a (really bad) photo, the bulkhead is bottom right, ECU toward the top left.

If I were to try and cut and solder a new wire in, what gauge wire should I use?

Does anyone know a good mobile mechanic guy in the area of Junction 1 of the M3?

Any help much appreciated. Please help :crybaby2:
Thanks
Nigel

Well, I fixed the wire anyway, but the car wouldn't start. Repeatedly turned the key for a while, and it worked. It worked fine all day. Tried again this morning and nothing. Repeatedly turned the key and again and eventually it roared into life again.

Is this an ECU fault, or a starter motor/solonoid fault?

I'm thinking the ECU cuz it either starts without a problem with good strong cranking, or it doesn't even try. Also, when cold there is a little hunting at idle, not a lot though, and when in gear and no gas or brake, the car lurches a little bit.
