Ok...my gearshift lever came away from the steering column on my 2006 ML500. Anyone know how I can shift the car into reverse and then drive to get it over to my mechanic. The wires are still attached to the dangling lever so I can get it into park, but not into reverse or drive. Called my mechanic who is ordering a new switch. He said I might be able to get the trans to shift into reverse or drive if I insert a small screwdriver into the hole where the switch wires are hanging from. Any ideas out there?

If you are going to tow it must be in NEUTRAL. This truck must be flatbedded.

Foot on the brake and try the mech. suggestion.

Thanks....with foot on brake and pushing the lever into it's original position, I rocked it back and forth with two hands. This coaxed the switch to move the trans to N. More rocking got it to R. Now awaiting mechanic's call and will attempt to get it to D in same manner.
