How is it possible that the unibody W164 has a towing rating of 7200 lbs and the truck based W163 only 5000 lbs? This does not make sense to me..........

I believe the W163 had a towing rating of 7000+ in Europe. Maybe lawyers got involved here in the states?

Does the W164 have beefier brakes? Bigger coolers on the transmission/engine?

I dont know, just throwing stuff out.

Better hitch. US 163 should have had a conventional style receiver hitch that mounted to the frame rails. European 163 hitch is a different design that brings the load point closer to the crossmember and hence reduces the moment load. The 164 uses a hitch design that couples the loads to the vehicle better.

Maybe I'm off-base, but I wouldn't even consider towing anything close to the maximum recommended weight (5000 to 7000 lbs). If you're looking for a towing vehicle, get a truck.
