one thing thats got me thinking is how the windscreen wipers go the opposite way than most other cars... (at first I thought they just didn't change the wipers around when building RHD but then when i saw a LHD one with wipers that swing the same way as most RHD cars i just loved them even more!!!)

It looks so cool when you're scorching down the motorway in the pouring rain with these monstorous wipers swing the opposite way, but does anyone know why>??

From the Introduction into Service Manual, page 417:
..."The wipers park on the driver side, so that the first wiping cycle clears the viewing field of the driver."...

thanks for that myamar, i knew it'd would be something typically germanly logical like that.

I used to work at a VW/Audi dealership firstly in spare parts then as a new car salesman. When trying to decypher parts catalogues we were toldto "think like a german". Everything is for a reason and its usually so logical its not funny.

yeah, i had noticed the e39 BMW was like that too.

Yes, my RHD E39/W140 all have the same style...
W124..coz it is a single arm, always park at driver side.... RHD 230E is, LHD E420 also

the reason is the same for both bmw and mercedes.

it was costing too much money to make different setups for left / right hand drive cars. so they've made one wiper setup, and thats what you get no matter where in the world u r.

this policy is followed to this day, with the right hand drive w220 wipers again going the wrong way.

but i think its limited to cars like the s-class, and the bmw 5 and 7 series....

imho!

My 1984 380SL has the windshield wiper swipe start on the left side too. To me the funny part was that they couldn't engineer a 1 wiper system on the W140 that would work (if you notice the driver's side wiper it's the same as an E class) so they had to add another wiper on the passenger side.

But then that's why I own Mercedes-Benz cars....they're quirky and unusual![:D]

Well, you will have to remember that the screen of
the W140 is bigger and more important has a larger
aspect ratio (more widescreen) than the W124.
The movement of the in/out
swing of the arm would perhaps be too big?
Besides, adding a second arm resulted in that 90%
of the screen is covered, and that was (and is?)
a industry record.
