Found something interesting....

https://hudsonvalley.craigslist.org/cto/6182368827.html

Fake AMGs abound, but I'm not seeing anything particularly off about this one. Some sources list AMG as having messed with some production W140s, this could possibly be one. A VIN check could possibly verify authenticity.

Looks like a fake one. I say this because the sticker in the engine bay that says "Mercedes Benz and Amg recommend Mobil 1" is not correct for the time period. That sticker is using the newer AMG logo with the slanted "A". The old logo was, as you already know a regular "A".

Now I'm not sure about this but I thought any car that AMG touches, will get floor mats that say AMG on them. This car doesn't have them. Although this isn't a good way to tell a real one or a fake one because the mats could have just been in bad condition and replaced. But it's something I noticed as well.

Good catch. All I know about the older stickers is that the colored ones were used on older models and are now NLA from the dealer, with most of the stock likely put on fakes as they were like $0.50 a piece. Still, not a likely part most have. I wonder if anyone can identify it via the exhaust?

Not an AMG car, far as I can tell. Its been on CL since at least December in various ads. I saw it when I was looking for mine. It might well be a nice car and worth the money, but a real AMG its not.

Yep, that'd confirm it. The only reason it was in question for me was because the ad was so recent - if you saw it months ago for sale then it is not genuine as rare 140s get sleuthed by collectors/brokers ASAP.
