Has anyone had experience with the OT bulb? I've got a 96 S320 and the unit reads OK but remains unlit. Do I have to replace the cable and display, or can I pull the cluster and pull the unit and replace the bulb?

Pull the cluster and replace the bulb. Simple. Replace the other bulb, too, while you're at it, the one for your odo.

I just had the same bulb go out on my 93. I removed the old bulb and soldered in two short wires. I then just used a mini dash bulb from the dealer that I had and shaved both sides down as much as possible so it would fit flush into the opening.

Their is a youtube video showing how to change it to an LED which I didn't have the time for

The 1.5 watt should work, I have one 1.5 watt instead of a 1.2 since I couldn't find any anywhere and that's all the dealership gave me, saying that was their replacement. The parts guy said it seemed dumb though, since it's so bright it might fade the instrument cluster's pictures/drawings.

From what I heard, the early clusters had the bulb soldered in place, the later 94/95 and up dgital odo had a bulb socket. Mine went out, and they supposedly they replaced all the bulbs 3 years ago when the cluster went bad, I hate pulling it out again.
