Finally found the time to go the local MBZ dealer and test drive a 2005 S430 and Compare it to my 1991 300SE. Oh boy what a car, silent as a tomb, tight as a drum and really good power. But it's also $80k and it did not seem at all like my 126. The most evident thing is that you can't even see the end of the hood and can barely see the star. Totally different experience and I'm still not sure if I liked it. Guess I'll have to keep the old 126. Anyone else made this comparison? What are your observations?

Its a better car and I kind of like the star tucked down a bit. Its not better in quality though!

How is it a better car if it won't last nearly as long and is overly prone to a number of costly/annoying problems??

There's an old saying that goes something like this - to see how good a Mercedes really is, it is not about driving the Mercedes, it's when you get out of the Mercedes and drive anything else.

I've driven 220 series S500 and S55 cars and they are indeed marvelous machines, BUT.... they are not $90,000 better than my pair of 126 cars. My '87 560SEC is about where I want it with suspension modifications and upgraded rims/tires and drives as nice as the 220s. Plus, once I put the 3.07 Limited Slip differential in the SEC......... :)

No question the W220 is a very nice car, but the problem is I could tell it's MB from a distance.

when u move from a 126 to a 220....its like any new car experience. its a new car!

it has more electronics, more 'comfortable' seats, better soundproofing, newer and quieter engine, possibly more power, and so on..........

but i think a well maintained 126 has far more style than the 220.

yes. the 220 is in many many ways a better car, but i would be very hard pressed to sell the 126 for a 220...difficult decision.

In term of comfy and performance , W220 is way better car than W126 ( even W140 is much better than W126 per se), but W126 got soul. A Well taken care W126 outshines both W140 and W220 , those new models are plastic moulded more than anything else, and the electronics teething problems bound to outweigh their advantages.

W126 gives me enough power/bhp, adequate sound insulation and perfect candidate for DIY weekends.

my $0.02

Cheers!

ive got all 3 and they are all very different but spectacular in their own way. w220 is lightning quick, w140 feels solid and menacing, w126 is classic and timeless

Gonna have to try the test drive, but I do LOVE my 84 worn out, worn in 280SEL AMG EURO... Even with all the bugs an gremlins. It's all in the lines.. I look at the C280, an it's just not my style, looks to refined, and doesn't get the head turns like my w126 does. Had this kid in a LEXUS realy SCOPING my Cede. I saw it in his eyes, that WANTON lust for my car...I'll stick with my 280SEL AMG

you looked at a C class.. thats the equiveland of the 80/90's 190 series. I'd look at the S class since thats what the w126's are.

I worked at a Benz dealership as a sales person back in the mid 2000s. At the time I had my 1985 280SE. I remember very clearly driving an w220 S350 from one dealership to another. Sure, it drove well, it handled well but there is just something about a 126 that has a sense of occasion to it. Its amazing when you keep your eyes peeled, just how many people still have a good stare when you drive around a 126.

Umm yes they are..there is no way you can compare a supercharged 500hp / 516ft.lbs 24V V8 S55 with massive 6piston brakes, airmatic, dynamic seats etc etc to a lethargic 560SEC.

The 560SEC is still a beautiful looking car but it is 20years older than a S55 and it shows when you drive both.

Orange peel is still there. I went in my friends W220. Extremely clever car, quite impressively thought out. So many clever little features. Spent ages reading the hardbook very thick manual for my friend so he could find out stuff it did. Didnt have the Merc feel to me though, and seemed so plain. Completely unnoticeable on the street.

I find it hard to compare the w220 with our cars. My mom has owned a '04 S430 for a couple years and having driven it many times (on both long and short trips), it's a great car for what it's meant to be. It's fast, has air ride suspension (unreal smooth), 4matic is handy here in NY, and packed with different options. The only draw back IMO is that the car drives you, you dont drive the car. I feel the w126 gives you the feeling of being in control, sensing everything you're doing. When you press the gas pedal in the w220 you hear nothing, just feel yourself getting pushed back into your seat.

I have been pondering buying a 00-01 s500 lately, has anyone had the pleasure of working on themselves and can relate to how doable self maintaning is on these cars?

I can figure out most things on my own, and taking the car apart isnt too dramatic, but I dont want to have to hook it up to a computer to diagnose everything or to check the oil level. To me that is a sure way of me saying no to the idea of ever owning one.
