I have a 1989 300SE with 126k on it, in excellent condition. I have recently driven a 2000 S430, and found it a very good car. Handled well, nicely appointed, etc. I am a bit intimidated by the many electronic doo-dads. Is this something to fear? What else should I know about the W220, as it compares to the W126? Anyone with experience, please share.

My parents have (had) both types of cars and as far as i can tell they find the W140 600 (with every option) to be the best all rounder, though my dad is a big fan of the W220 shape.

Current MB/DC technology is nothing to be feared, if you're in the market, just remember to get as many options as possible and the biggest engine your budget will allow.

Good luck in making a decision.

I have had both. The 126, while it is a great car for its day, will seem dated when compared to the 220. The 220 has more power, many more modern conveniences and many more electrical gremlins than the 126. In my estimation the 126 is a classic design MB that will not be mistaken for any other car but the newest of the lot is now 14 model years old.

You are looking at 2 totally different cars and comparisons are quite difficult to make. As far as maintenance is concerned the 126 is far from a cheap car to maintain and will require a lot of tender loving care to keep it going. The 220 once the previous owner gets it sorted out will be a reliable, fun car to drive. Make sure you get the service records on the carbefore you leap.

From my personal experience, a 126 with 16,000 miles on it and my 220 S class, the 126 feels old and austere in comparison to the new S. However the charm of the 126 somewhat neutralizes this.

as u can see, i have 3 generations of this wonderful automobile, and they all are different. the w220 is lightning quick, sometimes i wonder why people need the S55 or amg cars, when the s500 itself is quick. maintnence wise its been ok, but can be costly, simple because dealerships are damn ripoffs.
the w140 is solid, just look at how thick the door panels are and the thick windows, it is solid, and powerful. its lost a step in quick put your foot down moves, seems to have a lil delay. but still solid. Maintenance, same as above. the w126 is timeless, also very solid, heavy and solid. the car sstill has alot of its power, but doesnt compare to the others, esp the 220. but i feel well protected in it.
