Does anyone know if I can fit the newer shape steering wheel from the late126s that has the airbag in it (Although I am not adding airbag just the wheel) to my 420SE? Is it a straight swap?
Its just that I like the later look?
Thank you

It will bolt right on no problem. The horn ring should also line right up (that would be your main concern to make sure the horn contact ring on the bottom of the wheel lines up with the electrical contact on the column).

Even many late model steering wheels will physically bolt right on but the electrical connections will need a little bit of customizing.

On a related note...has anyone had any experience with smaller diameter aftermarket steering wheels? Success stories or epic failures?

Kodiakj2; I love how that newer wheel looks on the car. Could you let me know which model that is from (and the part no if you have it), and where you got it from. It would be a great help as the one thing that bugs me about the 126 is the truck steering wheel.

Also since my wheel's leather is all torn I need to replace it anyways.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks again.

Smaller ones make a big difference to the cars feel. I have a Lorinser one thats a bit smaller than stock, the car feels very different because of it. But as somebody pointed out, the large wheel is designed partly for long distance cruising because its big enough that you can rest your arm on the door arm rest while holding the wheel.

so will a steering wheel from a W202 or W124 fit a W126 without major modification?

I thought about going for a smaller steering wheel at some point. But honestly, I've fallen completely in love with the massive captain's wheel used to steer my road yacht!! Yes, I'll admit it, I love pretending I'm the captain of a large land-yacht charting the unknown (but in reality known, :p ) streets around this town. I'm missing a captain's hat though...

The wheel in the picture of my interior is from a 2000 s500 in black leather and Eucalyptus wood. Mercedes W220 S55 S430 S500 S600 STEERING BLACK LEATHER WOOD LEATHER AIRBAG on eBay!

Same wheel was used for the Maybach but they used more stitching on the leather and put wood control buttons on it. It will take some rewiring to get the horn working and the need to transfer the wheel clock over.

This picture below is of the wheel in a s500:

Of course, just about anyone who could, did. I have two MOMO wheels and swap them every 6 months or so....because I can!

The w220/w215 wheels are cheap and look great

Finding a good w124 wheel (and especially one with wood ) could cost 10 times as much

i changed mine with with C class steering wheel, i found a 31K miles at the junk yard, i bought it so cheap even without knowing if it gonna fit or not, and it didn't :grin, so i swapped the inside cores with the old one and the horn/airbag ring. and it worked perfectly fine.
