No.

No. They didn't even make any W126's in 1994. I believe 1991 was the last year. Not only that, W126's were all made in Germany, afterall they are Benz's flagship cars.

Hi Guys. I am from South Africa, and the W126 was available up till 1993. The last ones were Limited Edition models all numbered (Only 100 Made) only the 300 SE and 500 SE were available at the end. I am sure the w126 was made here, but I will make sure and come back to you guys. We have very few 560SELs or should I say SELs in this country.[:)]

Incorrect... I have heard of W126 being produced up till the 1993-1994 model year in SA. However, they were not for US or Euro markets.

I'm not sure about which models, but Mercedes Benz have been &/or are still been assembled from imported Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits or semi Knocked down kits (SKD) in Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, India.

Production could have been extended beyond 1991, if they had a high inventory of unbuilt CKD or SKD kits.

Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum. I have a 1996, 280se (W126) and a 500se (W126). Do you have any info about the Limited edition Mercedes Benz that was manufactured in South Africa? My 500se is a 1992 model and have a badge on bootlid and inside below the gear lever showing "08/100" Any other "Limited" 500se on this forum perhaps?

Hey. Welcome to you.

I've heard of this, vaguely, but don't think we've seen an example on here. I've read about it somewhere though.

Thanks for the welcome andquick response. I can only find some limited mention about it but nothing factual.

I have started another thread just now asking the same question. Appologies if it is not allowed or under the wrong heading.

I will certainly update you if I get anymore info.

Building from kits is not unusual. When we lived in Uruguay in the 80's there were strict import restrictions, but small factories built Ford Falcon's and Peugot 403s from kits imported from Argentina. I visited the assembly line; the foreman owned a gorgeous 1936(?) Studebaker four door convertible and needless to say the Falcons in that protected market cost as much as a RR.

the other thread David mentions has a good picture of his two W126s (Limited Edition 500se-South Africa).

It also explains the car was indeed produced in 1990. Many thanks.

Hi there, from Cape Town!
As far as I recall the very last run of the W126 was a limited run 100 csrs with a mix of 300SE's and 500SE's around mid-1993. SA only received our very first W140's at the end of 1993. I'd hang onto that 500SE. It might be one of the very W126's built.
A quick call to the Merc factory in East London should give more accurate info on your car.

I visited my uncle in 1994 in South Africa. He had a w126 that was pretty new. Seems like it was a 420SEL but it was so long ago I cannot be sure.

Thanks to All. It seems that my 500se is indeed one of the last 100 built. The only other limited edition W126 I could find was a 300se, nr 74 of 100.
