Anyone know how many ohms the original speakers are 1992 w124? from what I've been reading factory were 2 ohms and newer speakers are 4-8 ohms,so if you install new stereo set up,you have to change speakers too! that could explain why the 91 w124 I would have to crank the volume for all speakers to work right,it had an after market head unit.
Thanks!
This guy doesn't know! yikes!

Unless new wires were pulled for all the speakers when the HU was changed, the system will sound "thin". The diabolically designed fader knob is the problem point. OHM rating of the speakers isn't the problem.

Yea but the new system we are going to install says,Use speakers over 50w (output value) and between 4ohm-8hhm(impedance value) Do not use 1ohm to 3ohm speakers for this unit, from what I've been reading MB used the lower ohm speakers in early cars ,guess its time to pull the door card and look.

Pay a visit to Rik's website and study what he did to his system.

Most car speakers are 4 Ohm. The ones to watch out for are "Bose" speakers: they are typically 1 to 2 Ohm impedance - and sound terrible. If you replace a 2 Ohm speaker with a 4 Ohm cone you will blow the amp in short order. If you replace a 4 Ohm speaker with a 1- 2 Ohm driver then it'll be a lot louder and sound like shit.
The main problem you'll have with the 124 speakers is the size> Mercedes used 120 mm Dia. drivers in the dash location. That size is not readily available in the USA (proud home of the inch !)

the front door 'active bass' speakers are wired up to the active bass amp in the trunk, they aren't driven by the deck directly.

That’s what I have found online too.

Debating buying used one online. I guess it shouldn’t matter if driver or passenger side since I will only use the woofer, not the enclosure.

or finding new 2ohm woofers only. Need to verify mounting holes.

the active bass amplifier is pretty heavily equalized to compensate for the acoustics of that resonant chamber and speaker
