Hi all

I'm new to this thread, although I've been reading up here for a while. Even so, there is something that I need to understand in simple terms.

My 230E was damaged when an ant heap jumped in front of me after I had swerved out for a (already dead) fox in the road. Now it's been mostly repaired, but I need to find a 5-speed manual gearbox. I have a 4-speed from a series W123, which is common here, but the only 5-speed manual gearboxes I can find are from an E220 and a 260E. My question is this: can someone explain to me in simple terms which 5-speed manual 'boxes can fit onto which model e.g. 200, 200E, 230E, 260E etc. I'm not clued-up on engine numbers...

How will I know, by visual inspection, that I have the right gearbox? Does it have a number, and where is it located? What about shift patterns? What are the ratios?

Since I am currently using a 4-speed, I assume 4th is direct drive. So I'll need a 5-speed with overdrive.

Thank you
