Hello, I have a 1992 W124 (280 Auto) when starting the car the revs remain at about 500 on tickover. It will then drive Ok for about half a mile and then try and cut out. If you put your foot down on the gas it will drive a short way but will not shift up?? Also when you rev the car in park it will not rev above 4000 revs..... Any suggestions please..... Tried kicking it hasn't worked!!!! Thank you

You might be in limp home mode, typically stuck in 2nd gear. This has been discussed at length on the W210 E-Class forum so you might check our sticky threads for the various causes. I don't know about yours but my 2001 E-Class has a rev limiter that only allows around 4000 RPM in park.

1992 don't have electronics that could put the car in limp mode, but could have mechanical governor. I would not worry about reving on idle at this point.
From your description your car is lacking power at some situations and will not shift up?
Go to W124 section and ask specific questions, so fellow 280 owners can share their experience.

When mine did that it was the fuel pressure control regulator. It was just draining fuel all the time when the car was idling or the fuel pump was priming before turning the key all the way to start the engine.
