does anyone know offhand how you remove the whole ash tray on one of these cars? I see there's two screws in there under the metal popout tray, but even with those removed, the wood panel with the ashtray popout doesn't seem to want to budge... do I need to remove the wooden panel around the shifter first, and/or pull the stereo?

also, on 93+ cars with the center box, how do you remove the lower console wood piece? I know on pre-facelift cars there's a screw under the little piece of carpet in the open tray...

IIRC, you need to pull the wood trim around tge shifter to the back so you can get the ashtray out of its place. You don't need to remove the stereo.

I think that also in the facelifted W124's there's a screw too, if not just remove the black plastic trim around the shifter knob and pull the wood trim to the back then tilt it.

ok, 2 screws I didn't see earlier in the very forward edge of the bottom of the 'roll top box', and the box lifts out, THEN you can find the screw for the center panel, yada yada.

man, the switches were stuck in, almost broke things getting that panel up, seemed trickier than on the 1990 300E i previously got under. had to reseat a bunch of the staples that hold the plastic switch panel to the back of the wood piece.

and... no power on the wires to the cigar plug, OR to the ashtray light, grrr. must be another connector upstream or something thats unplugged. its dark out there, so I left it all apart, tomorrow I'll pull the stereo and see if I can't find where the wires go. anyways, I want to plug an aux in cable into the back of the Nakamichi stereo and feed it down into the rollbox so I can put an mp3 player in there as this stereo has no front panel jacks, and also maybe feed some 12V down to the rollbox too so I can put a cigar plug in there for charging things without using the ashtray.

daylight, top down, flashlight. aftermarket stereo pulled (fairly clean install). the 3 wire connector that plugs into the back of the ashtray, 6" up its wires, there's another identical 3-wire connector thats plugged into nothing... the green-black wire which goes to this connector has another green-something wire to somewhere up in the dash, but the other two wires (brown, and blue-grey) dead end there. SO. grr, I can't find another connector back there :(

also these colors don't match my wiring diagram (which shows grey-violet to the light and black-yellow to the cigar plug) :(

still poking around. small flashlight needed new battery, going back out there.

and I FOUND it. jammed way back under a bunch of other stuff, the missing connector.

the wire colors in the wiring diagram ARE applicable to the wires that are between the bulb and cigar plug and the connecotr on the back of the ashtray assembly... but not the harness connector that plugs into this, ah well.
