Hello all,

My very well maintaned 280E is starting to loose coolant fluid through the headgasket. The coolant is visible on the outside of the block. I am trying to figure out how to replace the gasket as economically as possible but I fear that I am driving a timebomb. Does anyone have a clue how long you can drive a car where the gasket has started to leak? Or should I not drive it anymore untill the gasket is replaced?
Any feedback is welcome.

Thanks,

Marc

Re: Hi Marc. Please use the W124 forum...

Are you sure it is from the gasket? There is a hose conection at the back of the engine which may leak and you could be misled. However, if the gasket, then you need to be aware of possible overpressuring of the cooling system from exhaust gases leaking back from the gasket if the breech is adjacent to the cylinders. This could lead to a blown rad or (worse) heat exchanger. Feel the top hose after the car has been running if it is very hard you may problems.
