Uh Oh.....sitting idling for 15 mins with the A/C on and the horrible smell of burnt wiring starts coming from under the bonnet......upon inpection, it appears the electric fan clutch is trying it's hardest to catch fire......even spraying some evil smelling, molten black stuff around the place. Gunna try and pull it apart today and see what gives. No vibration, fan bearings all good, no blown fuses and even drove the car 60 kms home with no issue with engine temp....will see what happens....

Thats the viscous fan and it has 4 bolts I think on the back side. If there is black rubber falling off sounds like the A/C compressor is locked up from what you are saying. There is no electrical power to the Viscous fan, Could have been the bearing on the air pump/smog pump also as it only engages at start up.

Good Luck

It sounds like the four cylinder engines came with an electric fan clutch, like on the 201 cars. You might try asking the good folks in the 201 section. Wish I could help, but there aren't many 230TEs on this continent.
