I am from Zimbabwe and have just acquired a w124 200D (2 litre diesel, manual) for my wife and I would like know the fuel consumption figures. Would anyone out there have an idea? What have been your expeirences with the vehicle?

I intend buying an automatic W124 300D (3 litre, 6-cylinder) in the next 2 months and would also like to know the performance and fuel consumption figures. What have been your experiences with the vehicle?

As you can see, i am hooked onto diesel vehicles. With the fuel problems that our country has experienced, the fuel efficiency and legendary reliability of Merc diesels is pretty attractive. Pity they are not speed machines.

Responses to my queries will be greatly appreciated.

the 200D should consume between 6 and 9 liters of fuel, depending on driving style.
The 300D will use about 10-12 liters i think.
We have a W124 300D also, non turbo, manual, if not on the autobahn, it's always pedal to the metal (doesn't directly mean it's been driven very hard each time to 4000-5000, no!) shifting at about 3000, and fuel consumtion is about 12 liter/100km.

Reliability is indeed fenomenal with these engines.
we have 410.000kms, and nothing has ever gone broke on it, simply amazing.
I love these cars.

I also love the way these diesels sound... especially in high revs, non turbo... mmmmmmmmm![;)][:p]

well,
have fun with your benzes, hope to see some pics of them soon (also the 200d!)

I hope you had a great festive season!!

Thank you very much for your info. Sorry i responded so late - my laptop was stolen and access to the net was a bit of a problem.

The 200D is going very well. Only had to do the diesel pump. The car has 280 000km on the clock and so far i have managed 9.3litres/100km. I am sure on the highway and a steady speed, i can better that figure.

Would you by any chance know the fuel figures of the W124 petrol engines, namely the 230E, 260E and the 300E? I have a friend who wants to import a petrol one from South Africa. He's not too keen on the diesels.....

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I am from Zimbabwe .....
ouch. im sorry.

just kidding. so am i.

cant say much about fuel consumption figures since i dont have figures at hand, but i can vouch for the excellent work that is done by zimoco. well, used to be, i dont know anymore. i used to be an apprentice motor mechanic there in the early nineties. and the work done there, while very very expensive was certainly done by people i would consider craftsmen. meticulous attention to detail. i highly recommend them.

say hi from a lost son for me.

I have a 1995 300D and can confirm its a wonderful machine. Last time i checked I was getting 32 miles per (imperial) gallon overall with a mixture of town and open road driving. which is pretty good for such a heavy car.

Try and get as late a model as you can- the 95/96 300D in the UK came with the new M606 6cyl diesel which was a completely new engine and is still in current production for the later models as I understand it. The best body (W124) with the best diesel (M606). It runs sweet as a nut with 150k miles under the belt with only routine servicing.

I have had a few problems with aircon but absolutely nothing with engine or drive train.
