Hi there;

A few weeks ago, the sunroof on my 1983 300D Turbodiesel sedan "broke." While retracted 2/3'rds of the way back, it suddenly wouldn't close. There was a strange grinding noise and I was only able to get it closed by pushing the switch while simultaneously pushing on the sunroof.

It appears closed now, but a recent trip through a brushless car wash proved to me that it didn't properly seal. LOL - All went well during the wash, but the moment I pulled away, I suddenly had at least a cup or two of water dump, of course, onto my crotch, spilling out of the front left portion of the sunroof opening.

I'm kind of dreading what may lay ahead. It seems obvious that I've stripped some gears. If I push the sunroom button now, I hear that horrible grinding noise, and there is no motion to the sunroof panel.

What does it sound like I'll need to do? Will the headliner need to be removed to get to the necessary parts? Ugh.

Anyway, I just posted about a power window problem in another post, for sake of future searching. I wondered if anyone can offer advice and confirm perhaps that the headliner may need to be removed.

If the headliner will need to be removed, I'd appreciate any input on how difficult it is to do that job, properly.

When it rains, it pours, they say. Thanks in advance for any input.

All the best!

To clean the cable you do need to remove the headliner.

First, however, take the cover off the motor, its located on the left rear inner fender. You'll need to pull out the plastic cover, it just pops out.
See if the problem is inside the motor.

Neat! :) I didn't know the motor was located there. This "grinding noise" I hear though clearly originates up, near the sunroof opening. Does that indicate something else perhaps?

How difficult is it to remove the headliner and reinstall it properly? Ugh...

Should you need to shut the sunroof in an emergency situation (i.e. downpour) when the motor is on the fritz There's a bolt you can crank in the trunk with a ratchet. It's either 14mm or 15mm. Works in a pinch. It's located on the driver's side behind the fender well cover just behind the bulkhead separating the fuel tank and the trunk space.
