Maybe it was an option on the 123, or 124,... or perhaps your W124 was an earlier year?

I think ABS brakes were a rare option in the States
During the mid 80's mercedes started putting air bags, and ABS brakes in there european cars, but they didn't add them to the american cars until it became a standard that all cars build after a certain year must have air bags, and ABS Brakes.
My US Dot 1984 300D doesn't have airbags or ABS brakes. and My mothers 1986 W126 didn't have air bags.

That's odd. In the USA the driver airbag and ABS breaks were made standard on all Mercedes models. My 1987 300D has a driver airbag, ABS, and seat belt tensioners.

I know that airbags were optionals in Europe since about 1981 and they styaed optional for a long time.

How would one tell if their car had an airbag or ABS? Driving my '82 300D last weekend in the snow, it sure acted like it had ABS. It was the first time I've got to drive in the snow since I got the car. On a straight stretch of deserted road with about 2" of snow, from about 30MPH I locked up the brakes to see how it would act. Stopped straight as an arrow, no pulling to one side or the other. Also couldn't get the rear end to slide around corners. I was very impressed with the performance in the snow.

Do you have an ABS warning light on the dash? When you floor the pedal do you hear/feel and ABS system pulsing back at you? A well designed braking system can stop fairly straight and true even without ABS, it's all about brake bias (ABS helps though).
