On my 1973 280, my distributor no is: 0 231 310 002.
My timing at idle (~800 rpm) is set to 8 BTDC (vac advance disconnected as it acts only as retard).
When i rev up the engine to ~1500 my advance stays steady at 10 BTDC and when i rev up to 3000 rpm it maxes out at 20 BTDC.

I pulled distributor cap and moving the rotor steam slightly forward and back i can see the mechanical advance working, so.... From what i gather i should have 13-17 BTDC at 1500 rpm and 31-35 BTDC at 3000 rpm. What's is up here???

I assume you have a 2.8 engine I6. Adjust the distributor to 30 BTDC @ 3000 rpm and see where it lands at 800 rpm. If it is 10-12 BTDC it shouldn't be a problem. If it is more than that then you will have to work on the centrifugal weights or get a new distributor.

Aren't we establishing from my test that my mech advance is 10-12 degrees? So adjusting distributor to 30 BTDC at 3000 rpm will give me around 18-20 at idle.
