Completed the installation
Here is a little run down on the process, stumbles, and wins.
First off sorry this took so long, Ive just started a new job, and my time windows have been far and in between.
My parts list for my application
1. Accessory lights of your choice
2. Method of connecting to car.
3. Wire
4. wire connections.
5. SPST 30/40 amp relay
6. Heat shrink
7. Solder
8. Various tools to unscrew, unbolt and reverse.
9. Wire management (I used black twist ties).
This task is pretty straight forward, the hardest part is running the wires, There are several methods to success. This installation uses a relay to take the voltage burden off of the already taxed stock headlight switch. You could use the stock wiring to power the lights with out a relay, but for long life I suggest a relay. I also soldered all connections and heat shrunk the soldered joints, verses quick connects and electrical tape, as I found this method last longer, and closely resembles the Mercedes stock wiring. My car has AC I found the wiring harness useful to piggy back my wires to. I installed my relay with all of the stock relays, located on the inner fender by the hood hinge passengers side(U.S. Version).
The circuit.
-As already discussed the stock wiring exist to power the accessory lights which is accessed by removing the headlamp housing.
I made more work for myself, and so I write this so that others might benefit from my learning mistake. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REMOVE BOTH HEADLIGHT HOUSINGS. IF USING A RELAY. Remove the passenger side headlight housing And within the stock wires find the Grey/Green wire. (mentioned earlier in this thread).
At the Grey/Green wire splice a wire and run this back through the headlight bucket with the stock light harness. this will take it into the engine compartment. I found this method requiring no cutting of the stock harness. Its not easy to run this wire, as the rubber tubing that runs through the wheel well of the fender is pretty tight. try using a heavy gauge wire sprayed with silicon lube.
Once in the engine compartment run this wire up to the relay bank. Once again Use the AC wires as a guide.(if AC equipped).
I actually ran wire from both headlight connections, which is unnecessary, as all we want to do is activate the relay with this wire.
From the relay bank run a wire back down to the front of the car, this wire will connect to the fog/driving lights.
In the relay bank I had a fuse block that I utilized, run a fused wire from this connection to the relay.
The relay also needs to be grounded I shared the ground with the AC harness, as its located very close to the relay bank, this supply's all wires needed.
I mounted the relay withe the stock relays. I searched wrecking yards for a vintage relay that i could use, but never found one that really fit this application. So i purchased a new unit. I will not go through how to wire up the relay as there are hundreds of schemes on line, its as simple as:
switch
power
ground
accessory
Finally I have yet to find the fog lights that I am looking for until I find what I am looking for I chose a installation that would not be permanent to the body. I have a set that fit the car, and will work. I chose to use brackets that bolt to the stock bumpers that hold the lights, verses drilling.
Hope this helps
Cheers
