I know with the secondary air injection pump there is the 40 amp "maxi fuse" and the relay. When you start the car in the morning the air pump will power on and run for approximately 30-60 seconds, then it will turn off. I am not 100% sure about this, but I believe the relay supplies power to turn power on/off to the air pump.
I just recently had to replace the air pump, relay and fuse. A faulty relay caused the air pump to continuously stay on and fried the pump.

the reason it took me so long to diagnose is because Alldata had bad diagram and I still didn't learn how to use manufacturers manual, so I couldn't find diagram there.
this is how it works:
ECM grounds relay coil, relay sends voltage to 40 amp fuse, fuse supply voltage to air pump.
Did you do work yourself or dealer did? I wouldn't trust dealer, they cheat people all the time.

I have the DVD from Mercedes for the W203 model and do most all of the work on my vehicles myself. The secondary air pump, relay and furse was a fairly easy replacement. I do get some advice and second opinions from other mechanics once in a while. I was told with this job, it's always best to replace the relay if the air pump goes.
