Hi all, Had my air-con regassed about 2 months ago, all good for a while , then the last two weeks, has heard a sort of low pitched whistling. like a coke bottle being opened when you turn the engine off. Now the air con does not seem to be cooling hardly at all. When it was regassed by ATS they said it had none in it at all. I was under the impression that they had to test the system to some degree before they regas incase of leaks. What do you reckon ? is it likeley they have refilled it incorrectly and its leaked out , or is it just one of those pureley co-incidental things . If i take it back to them to have look will they be able to diagnose the problem or should i get a specialist to sort it for me ??

Thanks for the advice

Nick had the same problem with ours, whistling sound from the centre dash area, nearly drove me mental until I discovered it was the aircon and it stopped if you turned it off, next day noise had disappeared along with any cooling, turned out to be the aircon condensor that had a hole in it, was still under warranty so unsure of cost, apparantly debris gets in behind the cover and wears things away, the fitter said the new ones had a redesigned cover to prevent the build up.

hopefully theyve put some UV dye in it and might be able to locate the leak. Sometimes when you gas an AC system you cannot directly locate a leak sometimes it takes a couple weeks to represent itself. Take it back to them and hopefully they can find it this time.

Ok found 2 leaks

One on the dryer, seems to be a replaceable part in the condenser
And the top valve has some dye stains.

kind of same problem on my vito 111

Hi,

It's my first message on the forum :). I don't know if I should say ;) that but I'm french, sorry for any bad english.

My A/C is not working anymore, with quite same symptoms as above. I made 2 gas recharges, and some valves in the engine compatment were changed but it still won't work for more that 2 weeks after the charge.

On last gas refueling, and after 2 weeks, I still had some cold air on the passenger side but now it's over. The A/C specilalist I went to thinks that it's the condenser which is in fault.

Do you know how how this part can be visualy controlled (where is it?) and if it's true that to change it the whole dashboard (and even steering wheel bar) have to be removed ? My mecano announced me a 1000€ bill :/

Thank you for any help.

It will be the condenser.
This is the radiator in front of the cooling radiator, wide and thin, you need to strip the front to replace it, stones damage them.
Great care must be taken with the new condenser when refitting the cooling fans as this can cost another condenser!

Ok thank you for this fast answer!

is it here, behind the fans, the first radiator ?

If yes I don't understand why (well hmm...) my contact talked about unmouting all the dashboard and the steering system...

do you know some good reference for part buying, and unmounting/mounting instructions ?

Thanks again !

Yes thats it, Very common fault on these with stones hitting them.
The one in the heater should be sound.
It comes out with the bumper off and the front crash brace removed.
You will need new from MB, it comes with the dryer etc and must be re gasses as soon as its fitted.
Get it pressurised and get some soap bubbles on it and you should see the holes.

Thanks zenman
I realized that the A/C "expert" to whom I shown my van had talked about a possible evaporator failure... i will try next weekend to have a good view at the condenser, but I may not be able to put pressure in it so it would be a simple visual check. Otherwise I have the possibilty to pay someone so that he tries to find where is the problem.

Btw I found a nice tutorial for the condenser replacement (in french ;)) so i put the link here :http://www.forum-auto.com/marques/mercedes/sujet9625.htm

I will update the status of my problem here.
