I believe anyone can visit and even do the factory tour, but it may not be free unless you are collecting a car.

No need to sleep in a hotel, I will bring my sleeping bag with me.

I think you can but will be charged an entrance fee similiar to Sindelfingen if you are not collecting your car as mentioned by steve-p. There were a group of Japanese tourist there when I collected mine. There were alot of people there just to see the factory.

my friend went there recently while on holidays.
he just rocked up to the factory un-announced and asked to go in. the girl at the counter said "sorry there are no more tours today". he begged her and said he ownes an MB back in australia etc etc and she goes "ok there is one tour, but its all in german"... and he was over the moon. said it was all SLK's and it made him want to pull out his cheque book on the spot and buy one it was so amazing.

id love to do it oneday soon too
