Hi,
I'm attempting to replace the serpentine belt on my '91 300SEL, but I'm having trouble removing the fan. The book shows using special tool 103 589 00 40 00 to lock the pulley. Do any of you have any recommendations or advice for this procedure. Do I really need the special tool?

Thanks,
Gary

So, the new belt is on and everything is back together. I inserted some wire through one of the three holes that are located near the edge of the fan pulley. Then I tied the wire off to a nearby bracket to hold it in place while I loosened the bolt. If this didn't work, my next step would probably have been to fabricate something similar to the Mercedes tool.

Buying the tool is Really a worth while investment. They don't cost much and if you own an M103 it makes life Much easier.

The tool certainly would have made my life easier today. Unfortunately it's not something that you can pick up at your local Sears:)

true, but I Wouldn't be surprised if your dealer couldn't have it in a day or two at Most!
