Has anyone found a fix for this problem? The dealer had the gearbox rebuilt under warranty, but the problem still exists. The diagnostic computer does not see the problem and test drives by the dealer have not replicated it (happens maybe once a week or so). This problem does go away in winter mode (at the recommendation of MB Technician) but I do not consider this a "fix". Can anyone tell me what controls automatic downshifting? Is it a computer module or control valve system? Is it time for a trade-in?

heres what i did

as the driver of a 98 320 and a shop owner, I began to notice some rough upshifts. I asked one of my mechanics to test drive it, yet they felt nothing, probably because they didnt feel the car before.

So, as a result, I checked out TSBs and found out that the 98 valve body and software had its share of problems. I replaced the valve body and did a fluid change. Also had the transmission computer reprogrammed at dealer for $125

Problem was fixed at a cost to me of $775
