I can't seem to find a VIN decoder that will work on my 1972 280SE 4.5.

The VIN is;
108087 12-008583*

The VIN decoder here only works for newer models. I'd love to run the VIN to get the exact engine type numbers etc, so I can order the exact parts. Tried the net, but nothing there either. ???

Ideas anyone?

Thanks!

Hi Peter,

Glad to help. Actually the older VINs are even easier to decode than the newer ones. Here is what yours means: 108-model 108, 087-280SE 4.5, 1-LHD (a 2 there would have meant RHD), 2-Auto Trans (a 1 there would have been a stick) and it happens to be the 8583rd 280SE 4.5 built.

Hope this helps.

Hi flyboyike, my 1979 450 SEL VIN is 11603312084053.

Is this how it would break down:

116-model 116,
033-450SEL,
1-LHD (a 2 there would have meant RHD),
2-Auto Trans (a 1 there would have been a stick)
and what is the 084053?
thry didn't make 84,000+ 450 sels....

The last four digits are the production sequence, preceded by a digit for the year and a digit for the factory.

Actually, I must disagree here. Architect2 would be correct had these been post 1981 vehicles. And yes, I do believe they made 84000+ 450SEL 1973-1980. Anyone have the exact numbers. My 280E, for instance is 12303312049906. According to architect2 that makes it a 1974 which of course it isn't it's a '79. I certainly think they made 49906 280Es by 1979.

Hope this helps.

thats right, they built thousands of 116's.If you want quick way to find the year,it won't be on the VIN,on a 108 or 109 it's under the pad on the center of the steering wheel.Stamped in fine font is the day, month and year the car came off the line.on my 6.3 it's stamped 26/3/69 which means it came off the line on the 26th day of Feb.1969.It's usually very faint so you have tolook hard..
The plant is never indicated in the VIN nor was the build date.MB classic has this of course back to 1936 for one plant and back to the beginning for the rest.[:)]

VIN clarification for 1972 MB 280se 4.5

Hi All, I tried to order a part for my MB and I could not reconcile the number with the sales person, as it would not show as valid.

On this site I figured out the answer to what the numbers mean, but I still have some questions.

Someone asked in the past about a 108.87-12-XXXXXX. As it was explained the .87 refers to the model number 280se 4.5, but I have the same model and it says 108.67.

Also the last group of numbers refer to the number of production of your car in that particular model. Is that true? If that is true, then the part number would work for me, if not, I would appreciate further explanations.

Here's a link to the old thread:
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/vintage-mercedes-benz/1196113-vintage-vin-number-decoder.html

Thank you.

I, too, have a 1972 280SE 4.5 purchased new with all paperwork preserved. Its VIN is 1080671200xxxx, not 10808771200xxxx as suggested by a previous poster who stated that the "087" referenced a 280SE 4.5. I'm now curious as to whether "067" or "087" or both was correct for the 280SE 4.5 and, if both, when was one used instead of the other.

Did you get an answer to your question? I just bought a 280SE too, but I don't know whether is a 72 or 73. My VIN is 10806712016954. Can someone help me with this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Beaniemydog.
There should be another data card attached to the rear of your back seat. You would have to remove seat and then the back to find it. Take a photo as the card is glued on. Harald.
