All US vehicles should have it in the wind shield, per federal regulations. in addition to:

each bumpers
hood
trunk lid
each door
inside the frame
driver door jamb

now we get to the important part: why was the cop looking for the VIN, they usually dont that without a just cause... such as a report of a stolen vehicle, suspecious activity, missing or forged looking paper work...etc etc...

the cop was actually going out of his way to get you in trouble... did he ticket you for anything?

My temp tag had fallen off. I had not even noticed until he pointed it out. So i showed him the bill of sale that i had. I suppose he though it was suspicious. So he went looking for the vin...which he had to eventually get off the the door sill.

Which means i had to get out of the car and get searched (which is always fun). Then he ran the VIN to see if it was stolen, and the DMV computers were down. So i got a warning ticket for not having a tag on the car (which he told me to just throw away).
Nevermind, I appologize to the cop, he didnt do anything out of line. not having a plate is very suspecious in the sense of the car being stolen, especially if its late at night.

yea, he had reason. I just wish i had known to pull up the wiper blade to show him the VIN
this is the way ALL VINs are diplayed in the US, did you get pulled over by a europian cop?

i need to look at the car and find it specifically, but most vins are higher on the dash. Like actually attached to the dashboard...way above the wiper. Until i can take a look at my car again (at work now) i'm going to be confused about how both of us missed it.
Yeah, the Merc VIN is attached to the frame under the lower black section of the glass, not on the dash like the GM cars.
