Hello. Two days ago my husband and I purchased a used 1999 S-420 Mercedes Benz with 37,000 miles on it. This beautiful car has had an interesting past. It was first a leased vehicle, then it was auctioned, and before we purchased it, it was repossessed.

Yesterday we noticed that there is a lot of noise (vibration, like what you would hear in an airplane) coming from the engine right under the black plastic cover on the driver's side, right above the fan belt. Since I am not a mechanic and have little engine knowledge, I can't tell you what this part is called.

This 'vibration' seems to worsen with deceleration from normal city speed and with turns. A person from another site suggested it could be the 'heat shields,' but I haven't a clue as to what a heat shield is.

Also, yesterday we noticed fresh oil spots dotting our drive way. My husband put a piece of card board under the engine and today I noticed four drops of clear oil on it.

My husband is trying to contact the dealer for repairs. We do have a seven day return policy, or 500 miles, which ever comes first, to return the car.

Can anyone give me any advice as what is causing this or if I should return the car? We did purchase a $2,300 36 month extra Starmark policy on the car which, I believe is non refundable.

Thanks so much in advance.

Sincerely,

June
PS Does anyone think I bought a lemon?
Dear Mithra:

Thanks so much for your sympathy. You know, this car really did steal my heart. It was perfect in every way, except for the huge repair needed on the steering gear box!

I've test drove another 1999 model, this time an S 500, but it was so filthy on the inside and the dealer wanted more for it than the price listed in the paper (he said it was a 'misprint'), that I decided not to go with it. Why do owners trash a car so badly? My 560 SEL is in immaculate condition and I just baby that car! Whenever I take her in for emmissions testing, the tester always says, 'Bring that beauty right over here to me!' People even stop me while I am driving to ask me questions about her!

Enough about my car though. Mercedes Benz has stolen my heart and in my opinion, no other car can compare. It is a love affair I think. Well, I am back to square one with auto shopping.

Thanks again for the sympathy and for the words of encouragement. Too bad I am going to test drive Infinities, Avalons, and Lexus's too for comparison. Why do I feel like I am wasting my time? Perhaps it has to do with having the best. What do you think?
Hugs,
