Yes I think there is something wrong, the car is very weak when the AC is working, and also it tends to produce some high sound from the engine! Is that normal or there should be some adjustment to the car?

My vehicle is a 1983 200 (W123) carburetor.

Thanks for the input man, but can you elaborate more on the belt tension thing??? I have never thought that the belt could cause such a problem, true my belts are very hard and I was advised to replace them, but don't really felt hasty about it....

So can you tell me how the tension of the belt could affect the performance of the car? Thanks a lot for the info.:thumbsup:

Also I'd check to see if the system is charged (obviously!) but also if that auxiliary cooling fan in front of the car is turning on or not. My a/c would work pretty well but then start getting weaker. It was because the fan was seized!

I'd definitely check the compressor and also see if the belts are slipping or loose.
Your compressor may be running without any lubrication so have that checked out. I know that the freon provides that as well as some sort of oil they use inside it. Have it checked out. If you need a new one, you'd be surprised how cheap a rebuilt one online can cost.

Thanks Benzoid for the information, but sure the AC system is fine I got the gas refilled and lubricated. I just have a problem with the belt I think, It is so hard! I feel it is very old, but just is it true that it can be the reason for a bad performance? And how?

My 240D would really pull down when the A/C was running, the trick is to turn off the compressor when you need the extra power. If I came to a stop I'd kick off the compressor until I got back up to speed and re-ingage it. The same rule applied to the rare passing situation on the highway. My 240 is almost 2 tons rolling down the road with a 90HP diesel engine, I expect it to load up when the A/C is on, it's just the nature of the beast. Hardly a factor on my 300 turbo.

I think my 240d is only 58bhp and yes, the ac luged it down a lot. It added significant delay in revving of the engine. I thinki mines had a switch at the bottom of the petal that cut the ac compressor off for a few minites. Of course if you floor it to drive it anyways, you have no ac since its off for more power.

Also, the ac in the 240d is weak unless you refill it with that other non cfc coolant or something.
