Hello Everybody,
I was just leafing through the 'Gazette', which is the magazine of the Mercedes Benz Club here in the UK, and I noticed an advertisement for a 1998 SL500 for sale by a MB specialist in Hampshire. It sounds a very nice car, Aquamarine Blue Metallic, 2 owners, full history etc. Specification seems fairly standard with the added bonus of rear seats and Xenon headlights. What's not standard is the mileage - 10,000 miles and the price - £32,950. I believe thats 53,220 US Dollars or 38,838 Euros. I make no judgement - just wondered what you thought?

Regards
Steve

My initial thought is that it is too expensive. But, I have noticed an upwards trend here in my area with low miles. I am surprised what they are asking for them even with winter months approaching. Maybe it's the start of the values stabilizing.

I still believe it's sellers willing to let their cars go if they get that price and they are fine keeping them if they don't.

That sounds like an awful lot even for a low mile car. The prices in the States are not that stable!!! I would not gamble that the car in question would go back up in value to the point that You would get your back!!!

I agree drags!!

I think it is wishful thinking on the sellers part and if they get a buyer they will take it.

That is quite alot of money. Even with and maybe even because of low miles, the car may have some problems that will need to be addressed. Unless you plan to keep the car with extremely low miles, I'd look for a higher mileage example that has been well cared for and that comes with a full service history. ;)

That would be fair value in Australia $50 - $60k. You would be lucky to get a 92 model for less than $30k. There is a nice 92 with 60,000k on the clock local in Tas offers over $42,000k. We don't tend to get much rubbish here as the weather is a lot better than most, no salt and sand on the road in winter and the owners tend to have a lot of the work done as needed.

Cars are cheap in USA.
Everybody else pay about twice as much as we do even on new cars.

There was a SilverArrow with Pano and only 24K miles asking for $24K earlier this year, but it sat on Dealer's lot for 6 months. Finally it was gone (may be they wholesaled it off).

If I could sell my '93 500 (112,000 miles) for nearly $50K, I'd sell it tomorrow, and pick up 2 SL's with that money!!

Your '65 Mustang could be worth that much!

I figured, $14,000 is an SL 500 price? Give or take, year/ condition?

That's using a Kelly Blue Book as a guide.

back in the old days, ...in San Rafael, a friend had a '65 Mustang we dropped a 289 in it, using a Ford Econoline straight axle, then like the Marx Brothers, we attempted to chop the roof........ E-gads, what a mess we made!

Hi Ray, Don't misunderstand me, the car I quoted when kicking off this thread is very expensive even by UK standards, probably 3x the average asking price for a similar car with average mileage. My own '97 SL500 with Pano, Refurbed Wheels, expensive SatNav, and 12 months warranty came in under £9k. It has done 100,000 miles but no major problems in the last 12 months. SL's are pretty reasonable here due to the price of fuel and only a lunatic would by a 5 litre V8. Er?..yeah.... The car quoted is top whack, specialist dealer etc, I guess for somebody who wants the best and is willing to pay for it. I think it's overpriced too but wanted to gauge opinion.
Regards
Steve

I'm in the UK too. Anyone asking for more than £18,000 for a non AMG SL is quite frankly living in a dream world. It's all very well if a car is exceptional asking exceptional money for it, but the bottom line is whether a car represents fair investment. That's why that kind of money is just silly. If an average to good 1998 500 is say, in the region of £8-10,000 then my above figure of £18,000 would have to be for something very special, like 10k miles.

I think car prices in the UK and US are quite simelar. If anything some of your home market stuff looks cheap to us. My uncle brought over a 1985 Mustang 5.0 GT convertible and more recently a C5 corvette. Even after taxes/conversion work these were still worth more here.

I bought my 1998 SL500 (LHD) in the UK nearly three years ago from a exec. jet pilot.

Very well looked after and MB serviced with then the equivalent of 35,000 miles.

Factory pano roof, xenons, German spec etc. The asking price was £15,000, and I got it for £13,000.

as is no secret - I paid $10300 US dollars for a 1991 sl 500 in very good condition with 72k miles.

It needed thus far, 1,500 of work but won't be much more from here.

Japanese cars are cheap here maybe because we are closer. European stuff is very expensive maybe transport costs.

We are buying lots of online stuff from the UK & USA at present even with shipping we are getting stuff dirt cheap because of the $1 for $1 and the $1.60 for GB Pound, exchange rates. The down side is no one can afford to buy our exports LOL.
