Valve cover gasket-basic instructions
I have a leak in the valve cover gasket on the passengers side in my '99 clk320. I am about to go and get the gasket to replace it. Is there anything special I need to know? From the looks of it, it seems to be fairly straightforward. I'm sure someone here has had to have done this before. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
***EDIT***
I finally did this on Saturday and it took roughly an hour and a half because I was being especially careful. This is just for the gasket on the pass. side. After doing that one, I think I could do the drivers side in less than an hour. I took pics but don't have them with me now. I'll come back and post them later.
Tools:
Star bit set
Star socket set
flat head screw driver
Ratchet with a swivel head adapter
1. REMOVE AIR INTAKE
-I removed the complete plastic intake assembly. There was one star head bolt that had to be unscrewed, one small hose at the rear of the engine and the rest just needed to be pulled on to be removed.
2. REMOVE COIL PACKS
-I removed the three coil packs using a star bit (will post the size later) and set them aside. You should now have easy access to all of the bolts of the valve cover.
3. You may want to unscrew and slightly bend the tube for the transmission fluid to allow the valve cover to come off.
4. REMOVE VALVE COVER
-I believe there were 6 bolts that had to come out (pay attention to which was which because the one at the bottom towards the rear of the engine was shorter than the others).
5. REMOVE OLD GASKET AND REPLACE WITH NEW GASKET
6. WIPE DOWN ALL OF THE EDGES AND BOLT DOWN THE VALVE COVER
7. REINSTALL COIL PACKS, AIR INTAKE AND CHECK TO BE SURE ALL BOLTS ARE SECURE.
That's all there is to it. It's not really high on the difficulty scale, but without the swivel head adapter it will be alot harder than it has to be.
Hope this helps.
