On my 2000 SLK230, the Main Key with the Remote Controller (no Batteries inside) attached, opens the Door, turns the Tumbler in the Ignition, but does not engage the Starter. But with the flat Valet Key, i can start the Car without a Problem.

Key Transponder

The R170 is equipped with a new
Drive Authorization System (DAS)
for increased operating reliability.
The system is no longer armed
and disarmed via the infra-red
remote control as with previous
models, but by data transfer
from the ignition lock, The key
contains a transponder with an
automatic code modulator. This
is supplied with energy by a coil
on the ignition lock when the
ignition is switched on, and in turn,
emits a signal which is recieved by
the coil and transmitted to the central
locking unit. If the correct code is
recieved, a signal is sent to the engine
management system to allow starting.

The advantage of this system is that
a signal can be sent to the immobilizer
regardless of the condition of the battery
in the key, and independently of the
remote control system.

Hopefully you specified an 'additional' key when you order the valet key and not a replacement key. A replacement disables the original key in the DAS system, while an additional key gets added to the list of authorized keys for the car.

I see, but both keys worked, months after i got the replacement key.
Hmm, that's not what you said in post 4

So which is the actual correct statement? That can make a difference in the diagnosis.

The main key worked fine, but i wanted a flat key for the key ring. A few months after i got the flat key, the car had to go to the body shop, and they were using the main key.
After that, i used the flat key again for a few months, but 2 weeks ago, when i turned my car in for a service, the main key did not work anymore, but the flat (valet) key worked fine.

Probably the transponder chip in the main key that has gone bad. Can not be replaced and you can only get a new key at the dealer.

Test it by holding the flat key against the ignition lock while using the main key to attempt to start. The transponder in the flat key should transmit far enough and allow the engine to start even if the transponder in the main key is bad. If the engine starts, then the bad transponder diagnosis is correct, if not then back to the drawing board.

The transponder has never worked, since i bought the car, this was another reason to buy a flat key. Thanks anyway!

Your car originally came with the optional valet driver. You need a special unlock code to drive the car with the owner's key.
