Hello Guys,
I was researching into radar detectors, and from what I have found, Valentine One is the best. If anyone here has had experience with this product, or other radar detectors, I would appreciate it if you posted. I am sadly:) plagued with the M117 motor, and am 17 years old so I would rather spend 400 bucks on a good quality radar detector, than get a 250 dollar ticket and rape insurance rates:twak: . Of course, I dont "race around" on surface streets", but on those long freeway streches, "well thats something different":)
Regards,

Make yo'sef invisible to radar...

..get a Gen 1 300SD....utterly cop-proof. Maybe it's the Dural hood?

Not one ticket in a decade, and I never cruise less than 130km/h, anywhere.

I could get a ticket from the SEC parked...

I was just in the Apple store the other day, and for $129 you could get a device that hooked into your iPhone/iPad. I was kinda intrigued.... then I went and looked up reviews....it seems as though it's a POS-- "V1 all the way" is the general gist of the reviews...

Murphy will probably get me for this, but I haven't ever had a speeding ticket, and while I don't cruise at 120, I don't exactly keep my 560 at 65 either. I think it's all about awareness of your surroundings and being vigilant on the mirrors and behavior of drivers in front and behind you...

escorts redline is better, sure it doesnt have gps for traffic cams and speed traps but we dont have those in LA/OC
im actually in the market for one too, as we speak, i have an 8500 but its old, and i like the 9500 and the redline

the v1 is overly sensitive with its false alerts, and sure arrows are cool. but the patent is finished so im sure others will copy that,
but i think im about to just on the redline, longest range of them all, and i think thats important,
if ihad that drivng up the 14 to lancaster i would have been better off,

I'm with ElRojo. Even though the Valentine is a top of the line unit, that's the type of thing that really could give you a false sense of security and create some bad habits. I've even heard from people that they got more tickets with a radar detector, because a cop sees that and wants to pull you over.

Also, I've never gotten a ticket in my 7 years of driving,(knock on wood,) through simple good old fashioned observation and cautiousness... and most would think I drive like a mad man, seriously. Over time also, you'll come to know where cops can hide, and where they could hide, times of day that they're most active, etc etc.

If you're set on getting a radar detector, buy the $35 Whistler unit on amazon that almost everybody says works better than units 4 times its price... and then forget that it's there.

PS. The mere fact that you're 17, in a Mercedes especially, will get you pulled over. A radar detector will just not help that. The one thing to remember that will save you more money than any radar detector is, be respectful when you do get pulled over... and that doesn't even get into the speech about your "extracurricular" activities and driving. ;)

I have a V1 and love it. There are only 2 brands worth talking about - Passport and V1. The V1 is nice to give you directional indication of where the radar is coming from plus the # of signals you are receiving. The V1 simply has features the Passport doesn't, IMO. Everyone has their own opinion, this is mine.

V1 is the ONLY way to go - it gives you a real sense of security by telling you how many signals it's receiving, signal stregnth, and where the signal is coming from - it also weeds out fake alerts quickly. I've seen them all and not one comes close to the capabilities of the V1. I have a horrendous driving record but being someone who likes to stretch a car's "legs" - the unit paid for itself in the first 6 months of owning it, I've never gotten a ticket when paying attention to the V1.

I hardwired my v1 into my 996. A friend on mine swears by the passport. He bought a v1 and returned it.
I have a couple of cheap radar detectors in the other cars. I picked them up during the day after thanskgiving day sales a few years ago. They work surprisingly well and they are just $20 cobras. I think they run $40 or so regularly.
Here is the thing. If the cops are using laser-forget it. All your radar detector is going to do is tell you is that you are about to get a ticket. Here in MI, the local police tend to leave their radar on when they are out on patrol. The cheap detector picks this up with plenty of time to check speed and slow down if needed. State troopers are a different story. They tend to keep their radar off until you drive by. If they think you are speeding, they shoot you with the radar. So your detector sounds but it is too late. I cant speak to if the X band detection is better in either.
I like my V1 but I am not sure it was worth the money. My cheap ones work quite well for a fraction of the cost.

I now know why the OP made this thread. These cars are very fast. I have never had a car with so much power. I don't realize how fast I am going in my w126. It just glides over the road and before I know it, I am going 80mph like nothing. The power just keeps on coming. It is an amazingly strong and solid car. I might have to invest in a radar detector one of these days b/c I drive with a heavy foot.

Exactly,
whenever my Mom rides with me in "Der Bomber", she says "slow down leadfoot":D

Whenever my Grandfather rides with me he says "cut out that jack-rabit driving":D

Laser Jammers (Blinder etc..) are an excellent investment as well.

Active jammers for K/KA are Nice, but uber illegal...Blah.

Only illegal if you get caught:p
The consequences for getting caught with an active radar/laser/lidar jammer are VERY severe.

Don't risk it.

I've been somewhat interested in jammers more so than detectors. They're illegal in illinois, but if they're not in the passenger compartment and they can't prove it's in use, then you're OK. It's only a $50-$100 fine here anyways. and note this snippet from the IL law "(d) A law enforcement officer may not stop or search any motor vehicle or the driver of any motor vehicle solely on the basis of a violation or suspected violation of this Section. " However in CA it does seem like they're harder on it, but as long as you have two or less units, it's only an infraction, which is a maximum $250 fine under CA law.
