The Mercedes vehicles of this period were designed with complex and highly interrelated systems. Working properly, they are very effective. While the vacuum systems can be difficult to troubleshoot, I recommend against trying to modify them. It would be more effective for long term enjoyment of the car to fully troubleshoot and repair them.

A hand vacuum pump is very inexpensive - USD$30. That should be your first tool purchase.
