Another problem :(. All the vacuum locks on my '85 190D (57K miles) have worked perfectly until this morning, when a cold front (for Dallas-32o; Minnesotans please don't laugh) came through. I unlocked the driver's door, but no other doors would unlock AND a humming sound started up in the trunk. The hum would only stop when I used the key to lock the trunk, but would start up again if I unlocked the trunk; during all this "exercise," none of the door locks would lock or unlock. Anyone know what this is all about?

sounds like the cold cracked one of your vacuum lines...you can spend $10 and 1/2 a day replacing them all....i used tubing for a fish tank in my 84...worked great till the pump failed..

If you get the trunk open then look for vacuum hose in trunk lid and behind panel inside side by fuel door and under rear seat.

locks

The problem was a cracked vacuum line in the trunk; it's now fixed and the locks work perfectly. Thanks for the replies; I appreciate them.

Good to know it fixed...in addition of tubing : 1/4 solid black irrigation drip line fits well too dirt cheap at Home Depot.

good to hear you fixed it. you might also want to put in a new fuse if you still have the OE one in place. I had a cracked fuse once and while driving the doors would unlock as the crack in the middle of the fuse lost contact.

I have a similar but slightly different issue with the central locking system. Lock on driver's side door does nothing when key is inserted and turned. However, when locking the car via. trunk or passenger side, central locking works perfectly INCLUDING driver's side lock. Vac pump appears to be working correctly. My question is: does this seem like a cracked vac. hose either in driver's side door/somewhere between door and pump or does this seem like broken door lock assembly which I am assuming costs a ton of money to replace. Any advice appreciated before I take door panel apart, thanks.

It sounds like maybe the plastic cilp that holds the linkage together in that door. if that door will unlock from trunk, then vacuum lines and central locking is working also the vacuum solenoid in that door is working. maybe a 50 cent part.
