I just replaced the rear wheel bearing on my 1989 300TE. In the process of putting it back together.

I put new parking brake shoes on late last year and the hardware from it, the springs, was cheap and that is being polite. I had to take the parking brake off for the bearing job so now putting it back on, the cheap springs were trashed on removal, they literally just snapped apart when I started to twist it.

I cannot find these thing anywhere, no auto parts store has anything to offer. Found plenty of the return springs for the top and bottom.

I was thinking about tapping a small bolt or something but I just can't believe I can't find these stupid springs.

Any thoughts?

Little lost here, you say you can find the activating springs for the shoes but you cant find the '"springs" and thinking of replacing with a bolt ? I am not quite sure what part your missing - any pics showing ?

EPC for my 1990 300E shows a parking brake shoe kit that includes the shoes, a complete set of springs, and 4 bolts... I don't have your VIN or I'd verify these are the right parts for you, too, but kit 1244200720 is the whole thing.

theres 4 each 'extension spring' 2014230592 (brake shoes to cover plate) a spring with a hook at one end.
2 each 'spring' 2014230692 (brake shoe pull-back)... this one is like 2 springs withhooks at both ends
2 each 'extension spring' 210 423 00 92 (brake shoe pull-back).... a single spring with hooks at both ends

those springs are parts 41, 44, and 47 respectively from this drawing:

per REAR WHEEL BRAKE. Fits: Mercedes | Mercedes-Benz of South Atlanta only 47 is available, $2 each. but the whole brake shoe kit with all new springs is $41.

On the schematic it's the #41 spring
me thinks if Mercedes put those springs in the shoe kit, they should be replaced every time the shoes are replaced (which isn't very often, a non-benz with a similar brake setup went about 400k miles before we re-did the parking brakes).

I *never* get euro car parts at the generic car parts stores, they just don't have the right stuff. dealer or online vendor OE/OEM parts only for me, and I'm pretty selective about OEM stuff as not all of it is really OE quality.

Looks like it is not officially made anymore and can only come in the shoe set. I agree about the generic parts stores, but this was a "oh crap it broke" spring, I didn't think it would be an ordeal. I might be able to figure out a home made one, oddly our local Ace Hardware has all kinds of springs available.

Actually I did, got one from mercedes source. the quality of the springs that came with the shoes last year were horrendous, the hook part just snapped off.

Genuine MB springs are $0.50 each X 4 retail

Give Lionel a shout, Your dealer may have some.

They were used for many years.

201 423 05 92

Those aftermarket kits are cheap, and now you know why.

Thanks for the help, evidently there is a newer part number 2214230092, and its used on MB's from mid 2000's and up.

I'll call my dealer tomorrow maybe they have some, hopefully.

Local dealer had 2 and said he can get more if needed, thankfully not at this time. Had my wife pick them up, she paid in change. That has to be a first for a Mercedes Dealer.

I still hope the inventor of drum brakes is rotting in hell (according to wikipedia Louis Renault patented the first ones in 1902), I hate him.
