Every member should feel free to post important documents to this thread.

I am posting Recall Campaigns for W163. This should at least help the new ML buyers.

Please do not post discussions here.
Thanks!

Recommended ATF list for All MB Vehicles with 722.6 Transmission

5 speed AT fluid is 236.10 from factory. Sheet 236.10 ATF is probably what you have if your transmission was never serviced.

236.12 was designed for and came with the new 7 speed transmission (W164). It is approved for use in 5 speed.

MB changed recommendation for 7 speed to 236.14 in August 2008. 5 speed can use this fluid as well.

236.10, 236.12 and 236.14 are all accepted fluid for 722.6 (5 speed automatic). If you will do a full flush, use anyone you like. If you will do a half flush (drop the pan only), you may want to stick with 236.10.

Fuel Sensor Failure

Some earlier model year fuel sensors surprised owners with premature failures. Attached document shows a failed sensor (from 2002 ML320 at 55k miles) and replacement unit. Replacement unit shows updated design and new part number.

Fuel sensor is part of a fuel pump. It is sold and replaced as a single fuel pump/sensor unit.

Updated Fuel Lines and Fuel filter

Fuel filter, fuel lines and fuel pump were upgraded as of MY2002.

The old fuel filters are no longer available from MB dealer.

If your vehicle chassis number (last 6 digits of VIN) falls in to this group:

163.154 up to 266446
163.172 up to 265965
163.174 up to 266484

and need to replace the fuel filter (recommended maintenance by MB every 60k miles), a one-time retrofit procedure is necessary by installing supplemental fuel lines for the new fuel filter. For a proper upgrade, all the fuel lines together with the new filter should be replaced however it does not require a new pump.

Where is Brake Light switch?

Brake light switch is connected to the brake pedal. Driver side foot well top cover needs to be removed to access it.

This simple switch not only actuates the stop lamp, but it also passes a signal to different electronic components such as BAS, ESP, ETS, ASR, CC, IFI, DFI, CDI, ME-SFI etc. It is common to fail and no longer present in vehicles with chassis number 371935 and above.

How to Reset Transmission

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(If you just bought an ML, you can ask 722.6 "adaptive" transmission to learn your driving style.

How to Reset 722.6x Transmission

1) Close the door. Turn the ignition key to position 2
2) Press the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor, and hold there for 5 seconds, then release pedal.
3) Turn the key to OFF. Do not remove the key!
4) Wait FOR AT LEAST 2 MINUTES. Do not open the doors.
5) Start the car, and use the driving style you would like the computer to remember.

It takes several cycles to re-train the transmission to your driving style. After re-training, transmission will continue to adapt to the driving conditions.).
Does this process work on older model car? or with the new ECT?

After disconnecting/reconnecting the battery ground cable

1) Enter the security code for the radio.
- Enter the number on the radio card and hit "OK" (Tune/Autoseek or SC button for older models)

If the code is entered incorrectly, word "CODE" appears on the display. After entering the wrong code for 3 times, "WAIT" appears on the display and the radio is disabled for 10 mins. After entering the wrong code for 3 more times, radio is disabled for 60 mins.

2) Re-activate steering angle sensor
- Start the engine
- Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock.
- Malfunction lamp should turn off.

3) Synchronize sunroof
- Open sunroof and hold down the switch. Sunroof moves to the end position, pulls back 1/4 turn and stops.

4) Synchronize power windows (as of VIN A289565)
- Press the switch for the power windows to the 1st actuation point, and then hold down for another 5 seconds after the windows has reached its top end position.

Synchronize lamella roof
- Close the lamella roof and hold down the switch for 5-10 seconds.

Note: When removing and installing battery, always remove the key from ignition to avoid fault codes. Remove the ground cable first and connect it last. Insulate both cable terminals to prevent unintentional contacts.
