Hi everyone! Check out this one on ebay. Judging by the bumpers and everything, it appears to be a US car. I was not aware that the 230 was ever imported here. Also, I have a 1977 Mercedes brochure and there is no mention of it there either.

Can anyone give me any info on this? I was under the impression that the 280E was, in fact, the only gas-powered 123 imported here.

If you mean 1977 US Brochure, you might be right. However, I have 1977 brochure, and apparently the 230 is one of three W123 with carburetor engine, aside from 280. The engine is similar with W115, and 230 is W123 early robust product as well.

(Sorry only able to scan the title)

From the e-bay picture, looks like a basic reasonable means of transportation IMHO.

Yes, I do mean the US brochure. In it, the only 123s mentioned are the 240D, the 300D and the 280E.

I also have a 1979 US brochure, in which the line up includes also the 280CE and the 300CD, but still no trace of the 230.

In fact, the car on ebay is the first I see or hear of a 230 that even resembles a US car.

It’s definitely grey – the VIN is European market. It underwent extensive ‘Federalization' with the bumpers and spedo.

she looks quite perfect to snap up even to have to fly out thee to get her, BUT what do u guys suppose the reserve is on her with such mileage? gotta be top dollar, no one may win her, unless a rich guy wants her as a collectable, and simply bids an absurd price. i wont even bother bidding, though i would LOVE TO HAVE HER!

Ask for pics on the jack holes. 4 pics would be good. Also close up pics of the steering wheel and shifter. Looks pretty decent on the pics. Just wondering if they swapped the driver seat to the passenger one. Passenger seat is all deformed. If that was the original driver seats. I don't think the car is only 34,000kms on it. My dad has a 115 with only 60,000k original since new seat is still in nice shape..[:)]

It's a no-reserve auction so it should be interesting what she sells for.

As for the VIN, pre-1981 the VINs were the same both Euro and US so that doesn't make it Euro.

Are the seats interchangeable? I am thinking the driver's seat may have been repadded due to age but the owner didn't bother with the passenger one.

Would be nice to see the door jamb labels for importation info.

Just got an email from Paul at the MB Classic center. He said the car DOES come up as a US version on his warranty screen and that it was wholesaled in 1977 to a dealer in Illinois. He said he'll have the data card in a few days then he'll know for sure.

The plot is thickening, isn't it?

I have a Performance Products Catalog at home, and it lists the US model W123s. They list the 230, 240D, 280E, 300D, and 300TD. I think the 230 was shipped to the U.S. sometime between the period of 1976 to 1980, I'm not sure. After 1982 for sure, it was only new diesel W123s in the U.S, no more gassers.

I just got another email from Paul at the classic center. He sent me a copy of the vehicle data card.
Notice the 5th line of the options list

Chassis Number: 123 023 12 045690
Engine Number: 115 954 12 015417
Transmission Number: 000707
Exterior Color Code: 740 - Pastel Grey
Interior Color Code: 101- Black MB-Tex

Option Codes:
401 Single Seats
411 Mechanical Sliding Roof
426 Power Steering, Automatic Transmission, Floor Shift
467 Central Locking, Instruments in English
491 USA Version
515 Becker radio, "Europa" (USA)
542 Lockable Glove Box
573 Headrest, L&R
580 Air Conditioner
593 Heat Absorbing Glass
638 Elimination of Warning Triangle
668 Mode of Packing VE III
673 High Capacity Battery

However, this still does not answer the question as to why this model was not mentioned in the 1977 US brochure. Apparently, the 230 was imported only in 1977 and 1978. Total number imported not known.
